The new steel I-beams are the supports for a new 2500 sq. ft deck and roof garden. The old roof underneath will be replaced with a new membrane that will have a copper liner to prevent roots from growing through the roof. A new 14x22 Sunroom will overlook the entire garden/deck area. Steel fabrication by Martin Welding 540-343-6001 and Crane Service by B&B Crane Service 540-982-2082 was well planned and in less than 2 hours all the steel was on the roof. Thumbs up to B&B and Martin's Welding.
Tudor's Green Roof will be an "extensive" type with trees, shrubs, and grass just like a ground level park. This will extend the life of the roof, reduce heating and cooling costs, reduce water runoff, reduce Carbon dioxide emissions, increase oxygen, reduce the "heat island" effect on adjacent buildings and enhance songbird habitat. The Tudor family will have an urban "Green Oasis" in the middle of a desert of black and metal rooftops. The roofdeck surface will have 6 different levels with 3 different Garden focal points. A Zen garden with Japanese elements, a English garden with a formal Croquet green, and a Wildflower Garden. All trees and shrubs will be organically grown, and watered with a drip irrigation system. Roanoke's first Loft/rooftop garden will showcase what's possible in adaptive reuse of old urban buildings using new "Green roof" technologies. The City of Roanoke has partnered with the Tudor family with this demonstration project of a suburban family with children, returning to live in Roanoke's downtown.
