Newly drilled hole on left has smooth, slick side walls and is too deep. Hole on right has been backfilled, tamped and the hole sides scored with the fork tool so that the roots can easily penetrate the walls.
The roots of this Crabapple are too long for the hole. Left uncut they will either J root up and come out of the ground or circle the hole and maybe girdle the tree. They must be cut off to fit the hole. New roots will form right behind the cut and the tree will be heathier with a bigger root system that fits the hole.
